StartupHoyas brings entrepreneurially minded students together by fostering the creation of businesses through involvement in competitions and by providing educational resources. StartupHoyas hosts events and competitions throughout the academic year for undergraduate and graduate Georgetown students with a focus on encouraging students to hone their ideas, develop their business plans, and create pitches to present to judges. While participation in every event is not required, each event builds off the other such that engagement from the beginning of the year will help in the formation of a successful business venture.
Participants tweet their idea to @StartupHoyas in 140 characters and compete to win $140. If you don’t have a twitter account – it’s fine! You can also submit your idea by posting on the Facebook event. All Georgetown students are welcome to tweet their ideas, and up to two submissions can be made per person. The StartupHoyas board will read all of the submissions and will announce a winner.
The Rocket Pitch is an annual competition where selected students present a 2 minute elevator pitch for a panel of esteemed judges and an audience of peers and professionals. The top two presenters and the “people’s choice” winner receive cash prizes totaling more than $1,500. The event includes a networking session where individuals can receive feedback from judges and make connections with leading entrepreneurs in the DC metro area. All students welcome to come and watch, even if you don’t want to compete. Make sure to come support your friends and vote for them for the “People’s Choice Award”.
The Social Pitch Competition provides a venue for student entrepreneurs to pitch business ideas with the potential to drive social change and create profit. Open to undergraduates from all four schools and graduate students from all degree programs, this competition is designed to explore innovative approaches to answering pressing societal needs, and to foster an atmosphere of interdisciplinary dialogue.
The StartupHoyas Challenge is the premier pitch event hosted by the Georgetown Entrepreneurship Initiative. The Challenge gives students who have developed an idea throughout the pitch series as well as first time participants the opportunity to truly launch their business. Teams present a six-minute pitch followed by five minutes of Q&A from a panel of highly distinguished judges. Eight teams advance to the final rounds where they will compete for a prize pool including cash prizes of over $20,000, web development expertise, and entry into Georgetown’s Summer Startup Accelerator Program.
