Eligibility/Qualifications

An interesting aspect of the presentation process is the Gull Cage, a Shark Tank-style event. The Gull Cage, selected applicants make a one-minute presentation to the Shore Hatchery board, followed by a six-minute question-and-answer session about their proposals. The Gull Cage requires good communication skills, quick thinking and thorough preparation Successful applicants will be notified and will be assigned mentors at the end of the event. Another unique feature is an assigned mentor who will consult with the selected entrepreneurs throughout the award process. The mentors are experienced business people with success in founding or growing new businesses. Mentors will be from Shore Hatchery’s board of directors, which includes Jim Perdue, President/CEO of Perdue Inc. and Frank Gunion, owner of South Moon Under in Ocean City (Marylands 2013 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year).

Description

Selected founders will present their startups in front of the Mid-Atlantics best angel investors, venture capitalists, and investment firms to compete for real deals and real cash at Summit 2017 on March 25, 2017 located at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington DC. Teams selected to pitch at the event will receive notice by March 18th and free tickets to attend the event. Non-selected applicants will receive discounted tickets to the event as a networking opportunity.

The purpose of the competition will be to promote awareness of Conscious Capitalism and more broadly purpose-driven approaches to business to young people, as well as support the most innovative ideas developed by students from around the country to elevate humanity through business. Students who wish to enter the competition must first submit a 5-10 page business plan that includes analysis of how the business advances Conscious Capitalism.

Teams of up to 4 individuals may enter. All team members must be students currently enrolled in school. All businesses must have ideas or business models in the start-up phase. Operating businesses that have earned more than $50,000 in revenue or have received $50,000 or more in funding are not eligible to enter the competition.

Description

The Minority Business Pre-Seed Fund (MBPF) was created through a partnership between TEDCO and Harbor Bank Community Development Corporation to addresses the needs of minority entrepreneurs in Maryland, who often lack access to the earliest stage of start-up capital known as the Friends and Family round. MBPF investments will be made to 2-3 applicants four times a year (a total of 10 investments per year) to help minority entrepreneurs take a technology-based idea or concept that represents a viable business opportunity and develop it into a product that can be tested with potential users.

Eligibility/Qualifications

Entrepreneurs may apply to the program, but a company will need to be formed prior to receiving an investment. Companies receiving an investment must have a principal place of business in Maryland. See the TEDCO Policy for more details. The idea must be at the concept or prototype development stage. Ideas for which the entrepreneur has already performed technology or market validation should consider applying directly to TEDCO’s Seed Investment Funds. The Minority Business Pre-Seed Fund, which is currently a pilot program, is exclusively for African-American entrepreneurs in Maryland.

They will also have the opportunity to mark your company as a potential investment for your fund, and to get in touch if they think they may be interested in investing now or in the future.
